A striking original Belgian oil painting dating to 1948, this large floral still life is attributed to the listed Belgian artist Leopold Muller (1879–1961). Signed and dated “L.A. Muller 1948” at the lower left, the painting was acquired in Belgium and retains its original period character.

The Painting

Painted in 1948, this exuberant still life demonstrates the loose, expressive handling associated with European Post-Impressionist painting of the period.

A tall turquoise-green vase holds an abundant arrangement of orange, rust, ochre and brilliant red flowers, accompanied by a smaller vessel filled with yellow, cream and deep burgundy blooms. Behind the arrangement, a pale patterned textile appears in sweeping strokes of white, gray, and muted blue.

Rather than meticulously describing every flower, the artist builds the composition through color, movement and confident brushwork. The complementary relationship between the warm orange and red flowers and the cool blue-gray surroundings gives the painting remarkable presence from across a room. At the same time, closer viewing reveals the individual strokes and layers of paint.

The work is unmistakably of its period yet feels particularly suited to contemporary interiors. Its palette works beautifully with natural woods, plaster, marble, unlacquered brass, bronze and other materials that develop character with age.
