The inscription provides unusually useful provenance for a vintage European landscape, connecting the artist to Antwerp and identifying Kalmthout as the specific landscape depicted.
It is important to distinguish this painter from the celebrated Belgian academic painter Émile Wauters (1846–1933). Because this work is dated 1966, it cannot be by the earlier artist of the same name. We therefore attribute the painting to the Antwerp-based Emile Wauters identified by the inscription on the reverse rather than to Émile Charles Wauters.
Kalmthout & the Belgian Landscape
Kalmthout lies in the province of Antwerp near the Dutch border and is closely associated with the Kalmthoutse Heide, a landscape characterized by heath, dunes, woodland, open sandy ground, and stands of birch and pine.
The subject of this painting is therefore distinctly regional. The slender birches, sandy foreground, low vegetation, and subdued autumn colors capture the character of this part of northern Belgium particularly well.
Original Period Frame
The painting remains presented in its handsome dark wood period frame, finished with a narrow lighter inner molding. The deep brown frame complements the earthy palette of the painting and appears entirely appropriate to its 1960s date.

We were drawn to this painting for its unmistakably European palette and exceptionally tactile surface. Up close, the birch trunks and foliage become almost abstract passages of paint; from across a room, they resolve into a quiet autumn landscape.
